Metricool vs Buffer (2026): Which Is Better for Small Business?

Choose Buffer when one business or small team wants a simpler queue, pays comfortably per social account, and values a lightweight create-publish-engage workflow. Choose Metricool when analytics, competitor tracking, reports, many networks inside each brand, or several brands and locations matter more.

Choose neither when the recurring problem is that nobody extracts the expert's useful knowledge, verifies the business facts, prepares the complete post, or owns review. Both products now provide real AI assistance, analytics, and supported engagement features. Neither automatically knows which part of the work customers would find remarkable or what the business is willing to stand behind.

These product facts were checked against the vendors' official pages on August 3, 2026. Pricing, currencies, taxes, volume discounts, add-ons, fair-use limits, networks, profile types, and feature availability can change. Verify the live plan and checkout for the exact accounts the business will connect.

The most important difference: channels versus brands

Buffer and Metricool count the business differently.

Buffer counts channels

One Instagram profile is one channel. One Facebook Page is another. A LinkedIn Page, TikTok account, Google Business Profile, Pinterest account, or other supported profile is another.

Buffer's paid plans charge per connected channel, with volume pricing as the channel count grows. This is easy to understand when one business uses a few accounts. It can become a larger calculation when an agency or multi-location company has many profiles.

Metricool counts brands

One Metricool brand represents one business, location, or client and can contain one profile from each supported social network or ad platform. A business with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and one Google Business Profile may still use one brand if the plan supports those connections.

Each Google Business Profile location requires a separate Metricool brand. That matters for franchises, multi-location practices, shops, and service companies. “One business” in ordinary language may be several Metricool brands.

Compare the real account map

Before comparing prices, write down:

  1. every social profile and Google Business Profile location;
  2. which ones must publish, analyze, or receive replies;
  3. which people need access;
  4. whether an outside reviewer or client must approve;
  5. which reports someone will actually read; and
  6. which add-ons or unsupported formats require another workflow.

A one-brand/five-channel company and a five-client/twenty-channel operator should not use the same headline price to decide.

Buffer Free versus Metricool Free

Both free plans are real. Their limits answer different questions.

Buffer Free

Buffer's current public pricing page describes Free as:

  • up to 3 connected channels;
  • up to 10 scheduled posts waiting in each channel at one time;
  • a slot reopening after a scheduled post publishes;
  • 100 stored ideas and unlimited drafts;
  • one user;
  • AI Assistant;
  • 30 days of Insights history;
  • Community inbox features with plan and network limits; and
  • limited API access.

The 10-post number is queue capacity per channel, not a ten-post monthly publishing allowance. A business can refill the queue as posts publish.

Buffer Free fits a solo business testing a few important channels. It does not include the paid Team plan's approval and access controls.

Metricool Free

Metricool's current public pricing page describes Free as:

  • one brand;
  • one profile per supported network inside that brand;
  • up to 20 scheduled posts per month across the planner;
  • no LinkedIn or X/Twitter connection;
  • 30 days of analytics;
  • analysis of up to 5 competitor profiles;
  • selected inbox connections;
  • the AI Social Media Assistant with a small monthly credit allowance; and
  • access to Metricool's planner and other plan-limited tools.

The 20-post number is a monthly planner limit, not a promise that the business needs twenty posts or has twenty useful ideas.

Metricool Free fits one brand that wants to test planning, analytics, competitors, and supported inbox behavior across more than three networks, provided LinkedIn and X are not required.

Buffer Essentials and Team versus Metricool Starter and Advanced

Buffer Essentials

When checked, Buffer's annual USD view displayed Essentials at $5 per connected channel per month. It included unlimited scheduled posts per channel subject to Buffer's fair-use explanation, one user, unlimited ideas, AI Assistant, advanced analytics, Community, and publishing features such as first-comment scheduling.

Use Essentials when one operator has finished content and wants a stronger version of Buffer's straightforward workflow.

Buffer Team

Buffer's annual USD view displayed Team at $10 per connected channel per month. It added unlimited team members, access levels, and content approval workflows.

Use Team when several people genuinely draft, review, and operate profiles. Do not pay for approvals merely because no one has decided who the approver is.

Metricool Starter

Metricool's annual USD view displayed Starter from $20 per month for up to 5 brands and a higher price for up to 10. Its monthly USD view displayed a higher starting price. Starter added paid-plan publishing subject to fair use, LinkedIn connections, more competitor profiles, longer analytics history, PDF and PowerPoint reports, Google Drive and Canva integrations, and larger AI allowances.

Use Starter when the business or operator will benefit from the brand model, competitor views, reporting, and many supported networks. Starter does not include Metricool's formal post-approval system.

Metricool Advanced

Metricool's annual USD view displayed Advanced from $53 per month for its entry brand bundle, with monthly billing higher. Advanced added team and client management, role management, post approval, customizable report templates, Looker Studio, and API or automation access described on the official page.

Use Advanced when client separation, roles, approvals, integrations, and cross-brand reporting solve real operating problems.

Do not preserve these prices in a budget without reopening the live calculators. Buffer uses per-channel and volume pricing; Metricool uses brand bundles, billing cycles, and optional add-ons. The cheapest displayed number may not describe the needed account map.

Both tools now do more than scheduling

Old comparisons often reduce Buffer to a queue and Metricool to analytics. That is no longer accurate.

Buffer's current product combines idea storage, AI assistance, publishing, Insights, Community engagement, collaboration, and integrations. Metricool combines planning, AI assistance, analytics, competitors, reports, an inbox, ad-platform connections, and higher-tier team workflows.

The meaningful difference is emphasis:

  • Buffer presents a lighter create-publish-engage path and scales paid use by channel.
  • Metricool presents a brand-centered planning, measurement, competitor, and reporting system.

Neither product's feature checkbox proves that a specific profile type, post format, message action, analytics field, or approval exception works the way the business needs. Test the exact network and workflow.

Why neither tool fixes the blank-page problem by itself

A complete social media system contains at least three different jobs:

  1. Source: notice the useful question, distinction, proof, process, safeguard, or point of view.
  2. Production: turn it into accurate copy, media, links, disclosures, and destination-specific artifacts.
  3. Operation: approve, schedule, publish, respond, report, correct, and improve.

Buffer and Metricool are strongest in operation. Both now assist production. Neither automatically owns the source.

That distinction matters for good experts because expertise makes its own evidence feel ordinary. A consultant may not notice the question that changes a client's decision. A contractor may not notice the safeguard customers would find reassuring. A coach may not notice the wording that helps someone finally understand the problem.

From inside the work, it feels like Tuesday. An empty queue plus an AI prompt does not necessarily reveal it.

“Just post consistently” is especially unhelpful here. Both products can maintain a schedule once the source, preparation, review, and response jobs exist. Neither feature list decides how the next truthful post survives the week when paid work gets busy.

Ask the expert questions before filling either calendar

Instead of asking the owner to “think of content,” ask about the work:

  • What do customers usually think they need when they first arrive?
  • What is often actually going on?
  • What question do you ask before recommending anything?
  • Which two options look similar but fit different situations?
  • What apparently sensible advice needs a qualification?
  • What do you notice that a less experienced person may miss?
  • Which part of the process protects the customer from an invisible mistake?
  • When is the cheaper or simpler option genuinely enough?
  • What would you never promise without seeing the situation?
  • What did you explain this week that made someone say, “Now I get it”?

The question gives the expert a real problem to answer instead of a blank page on which to praise themselves.

Turn one answer into a source packet

Suppose a consultant's public website says:

We help leadership teams make better strategic decisions.

Ask: What makes a strategic decision hard even when everyone has the same data?

An approved answer might identify a real distinction: the team agrees on facts but has not named which tradeoff it is willing to make.

That answer and the relevant website source can become:

ArtifactUseful jobWhat must be reviewed
Website FAQGive the complete explanationAccuracy, fit, and whether the claim matches the service
Teaching postExplain facts versus tradeoffsQualification, example, and customer usefulness
Static carouselMake the decision sequence visibleGraphic text, design, completeness, and destination
Sales questionHelp a prospect name the stuck pointContext, tone, and whether it belongs in public marketing
Email sectionExpand the distinction for an owned audienceConsent, links, claim, and next step

Buffer can store, adapt, queue, publish, and help operate that material. Metricool can plan, adapt, publish, compare performance, report, and help operate it. The expert answer supplied the useful source.

Approval is different from writing your own praise

Buffer Team and Metricool Advanced provide formal approval workflows. The psychological mechanism matters even in a one-person business.

Writing from nothing asks someone to be expert, subject, promoter, creator, and judge at once. Reviewing a prepared artifact asks concrete questions:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it useful?
  • Is this how we would explain it?
  • Is the example public and permissioned?
  • Does the image, caption, link, and call to action make one accurate artifact?
  • Is anything private, expired, overstated, generic, or misleading?

The tool can record the status. The owner still exercises the judgment.

A business does not have to become a media business

Most coaches, consultants, local businesses, and professional practices use social media to support a separate business. They do not need to optimize every decision around attention.

Business using social media for promotionMedia business
Goal: stay findable, credible, and usefulGoal: grow and monetize an audience
Measures: qualified visits, inquiries, preview starts, booked calls, proposals, and customersMeasures: reach, followers, watch time, sponsorships, subscriptions, and audience revenue
Cadence: enough to maintain the customer pathCadence: central production and distribution operation
Tool fit: smallest reliable system supporting customer outcomesTool fit: deeper trend, production, distribution, and audience systems

Buffer or Metricool can help a business remain present without requiring the owner to become a full-time creator. A text answer, static image, FAQ, customer question, process explanation, or website-derived post can be useful without video or personal-life performance.

Run one complete-cycle comparison

Do not choose from screenshots of empty dashboards. Use the work the business must repeat.

  1. Map the real brands, locations, profiles, users, and approval roles.
  2. Choose one public website section or permissioned customer question.
  3. Ask the expert one question that surfaces a useful distinction or safeguard.
  4. Prepare three complete, channel-specific artifacts with real media and links.
  5. Verify claims, privacy, permissions, dates, offers, and destinations.
  6. Route the artifacts through the actual review process.
  7. Schedule them in the formats and profile types the business uses.
  8. Confirm publication and correct one changed source fact.
  9. Respond to a representative comment or message through the intended workflow.
  10. Produce the report someone will actually review.
  11. Record operator time and movement toward a customer outcome.

Buffer wins when its channel model and lighter workflow complete that cycle with less friction. Metricool wins when its brand model, competitor analysis, reporting, and deeper measurement remove real work. Neither wins if the cycle repeatedly stalls before a useful source becomes an approved artifact.

Measure business outcomes, not tool activity

For a business using social media to promote another service or product, track raw movement such as:

tagged owned-page visit → useful next step → qualified inquiry or preview → sales conversation or checkout → customer

Preserve the originating page and campaign fields when possible. Separate direct and assisted touches. Use social reach, engagement, follower growth, and publishing consistency to understand distribution—not as automatic proof of sales.

A more detailed Metricool report or a cleaner Buffer queue is valuable when it changes a useful decision. It is not the commercial result by itself.

Where Boomp fits

Boomp is not a replacement for Buffer's queue, Community, Insights, team approvals, or integrations. It is not a replacement for Metricool's planner, analytics, competitors, reports, inbox, multi-brand operation, or approval system. If finished posts already exist, choose the operating tool that fits the account map.

Boomp fits when the work stalls earlier: the owner has a public website and real expertise but does not want every marketing cycle to begin with a blank page.

The current personalized first look accepts a public website and returns up to six website-grounded talking points before asking for email. They are source material—not finished posts, a completed strategy, or proof that Boomp already knows the owner's voice. The owner decides what is true and useful. Email saves the first look and continues into post ideas; finished-post work belongs to the paid continuation.

Give Boomp a public website and review the grounded talking points before email.

Frequently asked questions

Is Metricool or Buffer better for a small business?

Buffer is usually better when one business or small team wants a simple queue and is comfortable paying by connected social account. Metricool is usually better when analytics, competitor tracking, reports, many networks per brand, or several brands and locations matter. Choose neither when the recurring bottleneck is producing accurate, useful posts in the first place.

Is Metricool cheaper than Buffer?

It depends on the account map. Buffer charges per connected channel and applies volume pricing. Metricool sells bundles of brands, with one profile per supported network inside each brand. A few channels may favor Buffer; many networks or clients may favor Metricool. Compare the live calculator, billing cycle, add-ons, taxes, users, locations, and approval plan.

Which free plan is better, Buffer or Metricool?

Buffer Free is stronger for up to three channels with a refillable queue of ten scheduled posts per channel. Metricool Free is stronger for testing one brand across more supported networks plus competitor analysis, but it has a twenty-post monthly planner limit and excludes LinkedIn and X connections. Both include current AI and analytics capabilities with different limits.

Does Buffer or Metricool have content approvals?

Buffer includes formal content approvals on Team. Metricool includes its post approval system on Advanced and Custom. Test the exact roles, notifications, mobile behavior, exceptions, and retained approval record before moving the whole calendar.

Do Buffer and Metricool create social media content?

Both provide genuine AI assistance and creation features. A person still has to supply or verify the business facts, expertise, examples, privacy boundaries, media rights, offers, links, and final complete artifact. AI assistance reduces production work; it does not automatically own the source or judgment.

What if I still do not know what to post?

Start before the scheduler. Use the public website and ask the expert questions about customer misunderstandings, tradeoffs, safeguards, process, proof, and decisions. Turn one reviewed answer into a small source packet, then use Buffer or Metricool to adapt, operate, and measure the material.
