The TikTok bio character limit is 80 characters. TikTok's Help Center says so in its article on changing your bio: "Bios cannot exceed 80 characters." (checked October 28, 2026). Write the bio to fit in 80, and use the counter under Profile → Edit profile → Bio as the final check for your account.
Where TikTok says 80
TikTok's Help Center article Changing account bio walks through editing the bio and ends with two notes:
- "Bios cannot exceed 80 characters."
- "This feature is not available for TikTok Mobile Web."
The note names no account type, so 80 is the number to plan for.
TikTok's older support.tiktok.com article links now redirect to articles on tiktok.com/support. A search limited to the old support.tiktok.com address can miss the bio article, which is one reason the official number is hard to find.
Why is my TikTok bio only 80 characters when some sites say 160?
Because 80 is the limit TikTok publishes. People search for both 80 and 160, and published answers repeat both. No TikTok page we checked on October 28, 2026 gives 160 for the bio: not the bio article, not the name and username articles, and not TikTok's developer documentation for profile fields. Until TikTok publishes a different number, plan for 80.
An earlier version of this page, checked September 2, 2026, found no TikTok page that stated a bio maximum. TikTok's bio article states it, so this page now gives 80.

These are separate fields. Your name is what others see across TikTok, such as in the For You feed, comments and direct messages. Your username is the @handle that makes up your profile link, so changing it also changes the link. How to change your TikTok bio
In the TikTok app, open Profile → Edit profile → Bio, type the new bio and save it.
On a computer, TikTok's article gives these steps:
- Go to tiktok.com and click your profile picture.
- Select View Profile, then Edit profile.
- Tap Bio, enter the new bio and save it.
TikTok says bio editing is not available on TikTok Mobile Web, the browser version on a phone, so use the app or a computer.
What should a local business put in 80 characters?
A TikTok bio does not need to carry a full brand story. It should answer one question quickly: "Is this relevant to me?" Name the service, location or niche before anything clever, then the next step.
Do not spend bio characters on details that have their own place. Your name, username, website link and contact options are separate parts of the profile.
A bio that works within 80 characters
A solo hairstylist in Mesa does not need a sentence like "Helping everyone feel confident and beautiful every single day." A clearer TikTok bio is: "Mesa blonding + lived-in color. New clients book below." It uses 55 characters, including spaces and punctuation. It names the location, the service and the next step, and leaves room to spare.
